Expedition Morocco – Walking with Berber Nomads

Each year, thousands of people migrate into the High Atlas Mountains to escape the heat of the lower valleys. Following 4,000-year-old routes and guided by the seasons, these families are part of the nomadic Ait Atta tribes of southeast Morocco. In 2017, we’ll be joining one such family on a special walking expedition through the mountains. Sleeping in moving campsites and partaking in daily chores – like animal herding and traditional bread making – you’ll meet locals in tiny Berber villages and breathe enough fresh air to last you a lifetime. This is a rare opportunity to form real connections with people from another part of the world, and experience an authentic, ancient and well-preserved way of life likely very different to your own.

Expedition – Footsteps of Russia’s Reindeer Herders

There are expeditions and then there are expeditions; this trip, to the far reaches of Russia, definitely falls into the latter category. After a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it stop in St Petersburg, travel by train, bus and Trekol to the Yamal Peninsula; quite literally ‘the end of the world’. Extending far above the Arctic Circle, this isolated region has been home to the Nenets, a tribe of nomadic reindeer herders, for centuries. For the first time, the Nenets are inviting Intrepid travellers into their community for a first-hand glimpse at their daily existence. Learn about life on the frozen tundra, how they stay warm when the temperature hits -50°C, and how much the nomads rely on their reindeer herds. This is definitely one of our most eye-opening, off-the-beaten-track adventures yet.

Myanmar (Burma) Sailing Expedition

Embark on a voyage of discovery through the rarely waters of Myanmar’s Mergui (Myeik) Archipelago. Territory of whale sharks, dugongs, sailfish and the enigmatic Moken people, this Intrepid Expedition trip charts a course through a tract of the world totally unknown to much of the world. Snorkel over pristine coral gardens; meet the nomadic seafaring people, the Moken; trek along lushly foliaged jungle trails and drop in on island communities still unaccustomed to visiting outsiders. But the best part? Doing this all from the comfort and convenience of your own 50-foot catamaran, onboard chef included.

Beginning in cosmopolitan Almaty, join us on this expedition through Kazakhstan, from the shrunken Aral Sea to the ancient city of Turkistan and the Silk Road portals of Sayram and Shymkent. Ready for a rare, fascinating adventure through one of the least-explored corners of the earth? 3, 2, 1, liftoff.

Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek

Sacred Tibetan culture permeates every inch this expedition, seemingly touching everything in its path… including you. The opening of the Tamang Heritage Trail, which was once an unexplored part of the Langtang National Park, allows you to venture deep into the Tamang hinterland. This trek takes you through the verdant midlands and into Tamang villages including Briddim and Gatlang, where you will have a chance to meet locals. The Tamang people were originally Tibetan horse traders who used to migrate back and forth between Tibet and the lowlands of Nepal. They are considered one of the oldest tribes of Nepal, with roots tracing back to the ancient people of Mongolia. Your trek also takes you along alpine terrains, meadows and rhododendron forests. Take in soaring views of Manaslu Massif, Ganesh, Langtang and Jugal Himal and soothe your tired feet in the Tatopani hot springs before finishing back in Kathmandu.

After the devastating earthquakes of 2015, Intrepid Travel, together with our not-for-profit organisation The Intrepid Foundation, launched the Namaste Nepal campaign to encourage visitors back into the region.
For the 2015/16 season, we donated all profits from our Nepal trips to local projects and international NGOs, such as PLAN International and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). We’re very proud to report that we raised over $A700,000 through traveller donations and contributions from our business.

PLAN has been supporting Nepalese people and communities as they rebuild homes and schools, with a focus on ‘building back better’. WWF have been concentrating on tiger preservation, working with locals to improve habitat sustainability and conservation.

By travelling to Nepal, you are not only helping a struggling community get back on its feet, you’re also contributing to animal conservation, rebuilding efforts and the empowerment of local women and children. Thanks so much for choosing to visit Nepal.

Expedition – Turkey Black Sea and Beyond

Switzerland-esque valleys and mountainscapes, Sri Lankan-style tea-covered hills, crumbling churches on the desolate grassy landscape of high steppe – these are the unexpected sides of Turkey. Changing hands between Greeks, Hellenes and Byzantines over centuries, eastern Turkey is a treasure trove of architectural and cultural wonders that’s somehow slipped under the radar for years. Retrace the path of the historic Silk Road from Istanbul and explore the lesser-known areas surrounding the Black Sea to the ‘pearl of the east’ Van. Head to the spectacular Kackar Mountains, visit Turkey’s renowned dairy country in Kar, and travel to the very edge of Armenia to marvel at rugged Mount Ararat. Wild, vast and gloriously lonely – this is a side of Turkey few get to see.
