On this teaching program in the beautiful Penestanan setting you will have the opportunity to teach children a variety of English based subjects.

The week will consist of preparing lessons and teaching children at a local school. You will also be able to teach the students on your own or with other participants at the local school and experience a different lifestyle.

Overview

With Bali’s rapidly expanding tourism industry, the demand for local English speakers has never been greater. Children may have the opportunity to learn English at school, however this is usually taught by a local Balinese teacher and thus the children never really get to practice their conversational skills or hear native English being spoken. Balinese children are extremely eager to learn and are an absolute joy to teach. On this project, you will be spending about one to two hours each morning preparing lessons and around three hours in the afternoon teaching at a local elementary or high school. It is entirely up to you what you decide to teach, however there is a general syllabus for you to follow and examples of what previous participants have taught for you to continue with.

The aim of this project is to show students that learning English is fun and you are always encouraged to be creative with your methods of teaching – through games, songs, art, sport and music. If you are new to teaching, you may wish to team up with other fellow participants, as two to three teachers in the classroom often works well with regard to confidence building and gaining greater control of the class whose enthusiasm often spills over into great excitement! Your role is to encourage and inspire, but most importantly for teachers and students alike to enjoy the experience.

  • Ensure each child is confident and articulate in both spoken and written English.
  • Teach games & songs, showing that learning can be fun.
  • Design creative methods of teaching and make effective lesson plans.
  • Most importantly for teachers and students alike to enjoy the experience.
Schedule
Monday

On Monday after an early morning breakfast, we make lesson plans for the teaching program. This will consist of preparing lessons which could be on various educational subjects or something you would like to teach the children. After lunch, we set out to the local school and teach them the lessons which you are already prepared with. Later in the evening, return back to the center to give us your feedback on your first day of teaching.

Tuesday to Friday

From Tuesday to Friday, after you complete your early morning breakfast, you can work on developing lesson plans for each day for a couple of hours. After lunch, you can then leave to your assigned school to work with the students who will be eagerly waiting for your presence. Once you teach them the lessons you have prepared for them and engage in a few activities within the respective time, you can return to your accommodation and have dinner.

The teaching plan will be confirmed again every Fridays. The program can be changed depending on the school plan/activities from the local students, weather and local conditions. The working time will be around 4 hours a day.
