Volunteer internship position in Ghana as a physiotherapist and give patients and athletes the chance to receive extra support for injuries. Gain elective and work experience for a university degree or enhance your professional understanding to the practices happening in this West African culture.

Overview

Physiotherapy in any developing country is usually under-funded and under-staffed, and this is the case in Ghana. Although there are a number of leading physiotherapists working in the country, Ghana openly welcomes help in this struggling area of sports and community development. This project is ideal for any postgraduate or experienced physiotherapist during a career break or working volunteer holiday.

Your Physiotherapy Placement
The physiotherapy internship requires volunteer physiotherapists who are already qualified or who have had some experience in the area (at least to second year degree standard). Physiotherapists can work in two key areas of Ghana: community clinics or sports institutions.

Within the community clinic many of the patients’ conditions reflect the problems in Ghana: lots of strokes due to hypertension, car accidents and a high proportion of crush injuries to the hand and tendons from cutting and grinding machinery. A hand injury in Ghana usually means no compensation and no income. Additionally you will also be invited to teach Ghanaian physiotherapy students and work with current staff to share ideas and impart valuable knowledge from their ‘western’ training.

As a sports physiotherapist you will be working in association with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other leading sports bodies. This institution struggles to survive on a very tight budget and, as a result, the treatment of injuries and care of Ghana’s top players is often neglected. Through the GFA, volunteers will have the chance to work as a full-time physiotherapist in one of the leading Premier League football clubs.

All programs start every Monday of the year. You can arrive at the airport on a Saturday or Sunday to receive a free airport collection service. We'll supply you with full details when you book.

You can come for any period from 4 weeks plus. There will be an additional charge for each extra week you want to come, so please get in touch to find out more.

Note: some National holidays may disrupt activities.

Accommodation and Food
The accommodation is basic but comfortable and you will stay in a dormitory style room. The accommodation has a very sociable atmosphere and you will find it a great place to relax and unwind in the evenings. The accommodation is also centrally located to the placements. Shops and other useful amenities are either a short walk or taxi ride away.

You will be provided with three meals a day, comprising a mixture of local Ghanaian and Western style dishes.

Travel and Adventure in Ghana
You will be encouraged to explore Ghana during your free time so you can sample some of its breathtaking sights and meet some of Africa's friendliest people. The capital, Accra, is full of great places to visit and you will meet both locals and other travellers at a variety of bars and restaurants that provide authentic African live music and dancing. There are also a large number of western-style pubs and clubs, including an Irish Bar, an American Sports Bar and a series of dance-venues very close to where you are living. And, if you fancy a football experience to remember, then prepare yourself for watching Hearts of Oak at the National Stadium where the locals wave flags, blow horns and dance on the roofs of the terraces!

Other Options in Ghana

This gives you a unique chance to combine projects and experience the country in a whole variety of ways.
