1. Hottest in the world: Dallol, Ethiopia

This scorching hot town in the Afar Depression of Ethiopia holds the record for having the highest average annual temperature ever recorded with day time temperatures regularly reaching an average of 100 degrees!

2. Coldest Inhabited Place on Earth: Oymyakon, Russia

Winter temperatures in Oymyakon, Russia average a chilling minus 50C. Inhabitants cannot even wear glasses outside during the winter for fear of them sticking to their faces!

3. Darkest: Nordkapp, Norway

Nordkapp is referred to as the Northern most inhabited point in Europe and although the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ enjoys very long daylight hours in the summer, during the winter it can stay dark for months at a time! The sun does not rise above the horizon between mid November and the end of January.

4. Driest: Atacama Desert, Chile

Some parts of Atacama Desert in Chile haven’t seen a drop of rain since record keeping began, however despite this more than a million people live of this harsh land! Rainfall is so scarce along the coast of Northern Chile that remote communities have previously imported water by trucks in order to survive!

5. Wettest: Mawsynram, India

This Indian town receives an average of 467 inches of rainfall every year. In 1985, the Guinness Book of World Records dubbed it the Wettest Place on Earth after it saw 1,000 inches of rain in a single year.

6. Most Isolated: Tristan da Cunha

Tristan da Cunha is a group of volcanic islands, which are territory of United Kingdom, in the South Atlantic Ocean and is the most remote archipelago in the world with under 300 inhabitants! There is no airport on the island so the only way to reach this remote destination is a 6 day boat ride from Cape Town in South Africa!

7. Most Populated: Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo has recently overtaken Delhi in India as the world’s largest metropolis, with a population of about 36 million people! Tokyo consists of 23 special wards, 26 cities, 5 towns, and 8 villages each having a local government.

8. Highest: La Rinconada, Peru

This mining town in Peru is the highest inhabited city in the world at over 5,100 m above sea level! Originally built as temporary gold mining village it now homes over 50,000 people which is continuing to expand, haphazardly on a permanently-frozen glacier. This is not without its problems though as La Rinconada has no plumbing, sanitation, or heating services.

9. Lowest: Marianas Trench, Indonesia and Japan

Challenger Deep in Marianas Trench is the deepest point in Earth’s oceans which is a staggering 10,924 meters below sea level! Often considered the most extreme place on Earth, only two people have ever made the descent to the Earths deepest point!

10. Highest Waterfalls: Angels Falls, Venezuela

Angel Falls are without doubt the worlds highest uninterrupted waterfall at a height of 979m! The waterfall drops over the edge of Auyantepui mountain in the Canaima National park.
