Day 1 - Colombo
Ayubowan! Welcome to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. On arrival at your hotel, you will be provided with a Welcome Pack which will contain all the information pertaining to your trip. Your leader will meet you in the foyer of your hotel at 5pm. Head towards Fort Station for your first gastronomic encounter, sipping tea and snacking on Sri Lanka's favourite short eat, hoppers. Continue on to Pettah Bazzar – where a number of food stalls will vie for your stomach's attention. Snack your way through the lanes filled with pickles, samosa, saga, charred meats and curries. For your final stop, hop in a tuk tuk to Galle Face and a famous seaside restaurant. Here chefs here transform dough into huge sheets of wafer-thin roti, skilfully slicing, griddling, and mixing with vegetables and spices to create kotthu roti. At the end of the tour, return to your hotel.
Day 2 - Colombo
Rise early today at around 6am and head towards the Colombo fish markets. Pick up some fresh ingredients to use in a cooking class later today. Depart from the markets in a tuk tuk for a city tour. Ride down narrow streets, past religious monuments, to some of the city’s most significant spots, including Independence Square, the Red Mosque and Colombo Town Hall.Â
In the early afternoon, journey to a local home where you will be treated to a cooking demonstration of some classic Colombo dishes, followed by a home-cooked lunch with your hosts. This is a special opportunity to enjoy some delicious food, as well as an insight into day-to-day life. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the city at your leisure. Your leader will be able to recommend plenty of options for dinner, if you're still hungry!
