Photos are something that we take for granted, but imagine having no record of your memories, no photos from your first day of school, your graduation or your wedding.

We use photography as a creative and educational tool to inspire and develop children. Reaching out to volunteer professional photographers, students and enthusiasts, we harness their knowledge and skills to produce our unique photography programmes for 10-16 year olds in the disadvantaged communities of Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Their work will be shared, exhibited and sold to further promote what they can do, but also to enable more and more children to picture their world and record their life memories.

Our Photography Teaching Programme
You will be teaching a group of 4-5 pupils aged between 10-16 years of age and there will be 2-3 sessions per day across a number of schools.

The lesson plans are open to interpretation and should you wish to, you will also have the opportunity to teach a lesson of your choice.

Throughout the programme you could be working with polaroids, digital photography or black and white film.

Lessons will cover some of these areas; basic film camera operations, basic digital camera operations, black and white film development, film scanning, editing photos into a story, how light works and how to use it, working with nature, working with people and working with action.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never taught before, we’ll give you lesson plans which you can make your own to inspire the kids you teach.

What can you do on the trips?
You’ll have the opportunity to explore and create incredible memories, with safari’s on your back door, bungee jumps around the corner and beautiful scenery everywhere, there’ll be no end of exciting activities to get involved with.

The Impact
We have seen first-hand the joy that photography can bring to these communities and we don’t want it to stop, so join us on our photography volunteering trip with us today!

Unlocking the creative potential of the next generation, one picture at a time.

We usually run our 5 week trip from mid July each year through to August. You can arrive at Port Elizabeth airport on either the Saturday or Sunday and we will pick you up ready to start the project on the Monday.

Please contact us to check availability for when you would like to visit us.

Accommodation and Food
Your accommodation is basic but comfortable and you will stay in a dormitory style room, although you can upgrade to a single room for an additional charge and if we have availability. The accommodation has a very sociable atmosphere and you will find it a great place to relax and unwind in the evenings as there is a swimming pool, games room and bar in site. The accommodation is also centrally located to your volunteer project with shops and other useful amenities either a short walk or taxi ride away. With so many volunteers living together, you will soon find our communal house your new home, away from home.

You will be provided with three meals a day. Breakfast is help yourself from a range of cereals and toast. You will be provided with a packed lunch because of being on placement during this time but will return to a lovely home cooked meal in the evening made by our great cooking team. There will be a mix of Western and local style foods... South Africans love their meat so you'll be sure to have a braai (BBQ) or two on this visit with us.

Social Life in South Africa
We believe it is important to give our volunteers the chance to unwind and have fun while they are away. Our in-country team therefore organises a variety of social activities to bring volunteers together, to share their experiences and, above all, have a good time. The social life in South Africa really is second to none and you will return home with some truly unforgettable memories and friends for life. With so many people living together, social sports teams are pretty much unavoidable and there are plenty of local teams to play for. For the less competitive, why not head to the beach for some casual volleyball and football matches in the African sunshine?

And, if animals are your thing, volunteering in South Africa is an ideal choice. With trips to Kragga Kama Game Park, the Lion Park, the Addo Elephant Park and the Oceanarium, you will certainly experience your fair share of big game and African wildlife. You'll also get the chance to experience a Boma (an authentic South African meal under the stars). What more could you want from a social life abroad?

Most foreigners will only require a visa to enter South Africa if they intend to stay for more than 90 days. We recommend you check the visa requirements for your own nationality by visiting the South African High Commission website.
