This program consists of working with students at an hearing impaired school, mentally challenged school, regular kindergarten and primary schools in the morning and at our community school teaching English classes. We have strong relationships with these schools over the years and the age of students may be anywhere between 5 and 15.

These schools accept a non-formal approach to teaching and also followed partly with a curriculum. This means that we will not have to conform to the local Indian teaching methods or style, but everyone will be free to choose their own way of teaching and may bring their own ideas into class. It is important to understand that the methods of teaching are less important than the attitude of the participant towards the students. In addition, the subjects to be taught can alter, depending on current activities in the schools which might include, for example, environmental issues or geography.

The teaching program serves a dual purpose; of course it is meant to help children in rural India to have a chance to speak more English (usually even their teachers aren’t up to standard) and secondly it will give you an insight into the Indian education system as well as a good chance to become good friends with students and teachers.

It can be nice to bring presents with you for students. In our experience, the students are less interested in toys (some typical toys of your country might be interesting), but pictures of your family/house/pets are always well received.

The participant will work as an assistant to a teacher with whatever skills you have. You will make an important contribution by improving students’ spoken English, Mathematics, Geography, Science and other subjects in the school curriculum. It is an experience and memories neither you nor they will ever forget.

Community Outreach Program, Udaipur

Teach underprivileged children of the local community who cannot afford to get good quality education. Classes are held in the evenings after regular school hours and apart from conventional teaching methods, games and other activities may be used to teach children.

School for the Mentally Challenged, Udaipur

Assist qualified teachers and create an atmosphere conducive to learning and growth in which you can teach and interact with mentally impaired children.

School for the Hearing Impaired, Udaipur

Coordinate with qualified teachers and assist them in various tasks. Communicate with students using very basic sign language and through activities which will help them understand their subject matter better.

Regular Kindergarten and Primary School, Udaipur

Coordinate with qualified teachers and assist them in various tasks in education combined with syllabus and curriculum in English. This school is one of the examples of a community school with adequate infractures.

When confirming your dates please take note of the long holidays (mid-May to 1st of July) and the following Public Holidays which schools may take advantage of, this is in their discretion. During such times, renovation work continues, with the option to join special classes and English camps that are regularly requested by the local community.

Where relevant, taking part in the cultural festivities when they arise is also organized. The Holi, Diwali, and Dasara festival is a particularly eye opening and fun experience!

Furthermore, during the summer months due to summer vacations for the schools, Summer camps will be organised at the schools.

Aims & Objectives

The aim of this project is to bring the participant closer to the subject of the program and the theoretical knowledge and theories surrounding this. By adding an educational component inside the program in the form of a small curriculum, the participant will be challenged to develop his/her own vision on the matter based on academics.

09:30 to 12:00 - Teaching at the school

13:00 to 14:00 - Lunch

14:00 to 16:00 - Preparation on subjects to be taught at the community school

16:00 to 18:00 - Teaching, games, and interaction at the community school

18:30 to 19:30 - Dinner

20:00 onwards - Preparation on subjects to be taught for the next day at the hearing impaired or mentally challenged school or regular kindergarten and community school.

09:30 to 12:00 - Teaching at the school

13:00 to 14:00 - Lunch

14:00 to 16:00 - Preparation on subjects to be taught at the community school

Additional Equipment

Casual dress is appropriate during your time at the school; however, no see through clothes or low cut tops are permitted.
