You will be based at a combined school and orphanage based in the capital, Accra. Few of the children who attend the school live at the orphanage (located next door to the school) and the orphans range from newborn to 16 years old. The teaching staff are often overworked and therefore welcome any help that can be given. Working as a teacher’s assistant in the school and a carer in the orphanage provides the staff with invaluable support and often frees-up their time to give the children the one-to-one attention they need. And being a fluent English speaker will mean you can help in English lessons to give the children a valuable skill and added confidence.

You will also require a lot of creativity during your placement as lessons can be unpredictable and the needs of each child are unique. You will face daily challenges but the rewards are great as you develop your own support methods for each and every child. You should also be prepared for joining in with games and other fun exercises, often geared towards giving the children the chance to express themselves independently. It is also likely that you will be able to get involved with manual work such as repairing and painting the classrooms and school buildings.

All programs start every Monday of the year. You can arrive at the airport on a Saturday or Sunday to receive a free airport collection service. We'll supply you with full details when you book.

You can come for any period from 2 weeks plus. There will be an additional charge for each extra week you want to come, so please get in touch to find out more.

Note: some National holidays may disrupt activities.

You will be provided with three meals a day, comprising a mixture of local Ghanaian and Western style dishes.

Travel and Adventure in Ghana
You will be encouraged to explore Ghana during your free time so you can sample some of its breathtaking sights and meet some of Africa's friendliest people. The capital, Accra, is full of great places to visit and you will meet both locals and other travellers at a variety of bars and restaurants that provide authentic African live music and dancing. There are also a large number of western-style pubs and clubs, including an Irish Bar, an American Sports Bar and a series of dance-venues very close to where you are living. And, if you fancy a football experience to remember, then prepare yourself for watching Hearts of Oak at the National Stadium where the locals wave flags, blow horns and dance on the roofs of the terraces!
