You will live in Lugazi a town on the highway between Kampala and Jinja.

To enhance easy integration, cultural understanding and friendship, our volunteers live with host families who are located just a walk able distance to the place of placement. You will be living in the same community with some of the children you work with; this helps you to get to know the children even more. Some families have about 3-5 children. You can expect to share your room with another Changing Worlds volunteer.

The accommodation is simple, basic but more than adequate. The families will welcome you and look after you well - in true Ugandan style.

You will have access to toilet (a hole in the ground!) and a shower - however the water supply will be intermittent. You will soon get used to it but at times it can be very frustrating.

Your family will cook for you. You can expect to eat normal Ugandan food - like green bananas (called Matoke), green beans, yam, cassava, fish, beef, pork, vegetables and lots of fruits. We ask your host families to feed you the local diet. At times you may share the responsibility in cooking the food if you wish.

You will have access to electricity - there is no need for an adaptor in Uganda as the plug system is exactly the same as ours! Very handy! However the electricity will come and go due to load shedding so bring a torch.

Most host families will have a TV.

There is cheap e-mail access from the internet cafes in Lugazi. They are relatively cheap but not as quick as perhaps you will be used to in the UK.

There is a local hospital twenty minutes walk away from the centre of town.

We suggest you take an old mobile with you and buy a new SIM card when you arrive to Uganda. Moses the Changing Worlds representative, will take you to the phone shop and help you sort this out. The cost of a new SIM card varies but you can get a 'pay as you go' type facility in Uganda that should be more than adequate.

The streets of Lugazi are generally safe as long as you take the sensible precautions after dark. Infact you will never be alone in Uganda - your new found friends will want to take you around the place and meet people - that's the way Ugandans work!
