Changing Worlds has organised a variety of placements, of all which involve teaching spoken English. During the week you can work in a local school as a teaching assistant. You can also work with destitute children (not necessarily orphaned children!) who have parents who are imprisoned or are too ill to look after them. Here the work will be less structured than in a school but will offer the opportunity to play with the children, teach simple number work (adding, subtracting, multiplying) and to organise events. The boys and girls are ged between 7 and 18 years. In addition, you will spend one day at the weekend helping at a privately-run English language school in the centre of Chiang Rai. Classes are small and the children and young adults are very keen to learn. In return our representative, Wanpen, will provide further Thai language lessons, which should greatly enhance your stay. She also offers to teach basic Thai cooking so that you can impress your friends on return to the UK! Changing Worlds is looking for committed volunteers who will respect the Thai way of life and 'go with the flow'. This is not for those who wish to party hard. Patience, kindness and a sense of fun are all qualities that we feel are essential for our volunteers.
