We have a growing variety of paid and voluntary placements in both North and South Island, New Zealand. It is possible to combine the placements as well. PAID HOTELS In the hotels in Pahia and Queenstown you will be working with customers, your duties could include room cleaning and waiting on people. In the past we have had people working in front of house, laundry, security, food and beverage and housekeeping. Employers expect a high standard of customer service to guests. You will need to be well presented and outgoing with good communication skills and a positive attitude. Your hours can be long and unsociable which does mean working during some weekends. There will be further opportunities for those who show any initiative. Those with relevant work experience do tend to get the better jobs (and the better rates of pay!). PAID AIRPORT You will be working at Queenstown airport, in various jobs from the check in desk, to baggage handling to helping with the VIP's It is a small international airport and you will get the chance to work in these different areas. You need to be reliable, responsible, punctual and good with people. For more specific information about work at the airport then click here. FARMS, THE STUD AND VINEYARDS In these cases you will be living and working with local families. This is a great way to get to know the 'real' New Zealand. On the farms which are around Paihia in the North Island, general duties include rounding up animals, mending fences, feeding the animals, shearing and helping with the delivery of lambs. A valid UK driving licence is useful as the farms can cover wide areas. Participants may have the opportunity to ride quad bikes. The farms may pay you pocket money but this is at the discretion of your host family. There is no farm machinery work available. For more information about working on our farms then click here. The stud in the Wairapa Valley in North Island is a very special placement working for and with Sam and Catriona Williams who are among the top racing horse breeders in New Zealand. You must have lots of good relevant experience with horses. You must be hard working and be prepared to listen carefully and follow instructions carefully. You will be mucking out, grooming and once the owners are confident with your work you will be able to help exercise the horses. Sam and Catriona are good, fair employers but they expect hard work. This is a wonderful placement and you can earn very good money. Placements run mid October to mid February of every year. For more information about working on the stud farm click here. If you prefer to work on the vineyard you will be working in a small family business and so need to be prepared to do anything from washing up to picking grapes. The scenery is spectacular and you are just outside Queenstown, which is a buzzing young people's town. Ideally you should be able to drive. SCHOOLS Our schools are voluntary placements. They are ideal for those graduates who are looking to gain their first teaching experience or are pondering on entering the profession. The schools are in Masterton in the North Island, and hour and a half away from Wellington. Lake View school is a primary (5 to 8 years old) and intermediate school (8 to 11 years) and tends to take the more needy children. They also have a one day centre for gifted children. St Matthews is a private girls school for the secondary (post 11 year olds) and intermediate ages. Volunteers would be helping with general classroom assistance and with english, reading, elementary maths, sports or drama. Volunteers are encouraged to get involved with extra curricula activities and clubs. For more information about teaching click here.
