Our placements are in primary and secondary schools, in an orphanage, in a busy hospitalĀ and in a law practice. For those going to teach you will be teaching in English. This will be much appreciated by both your teaching colleagues and students. One of your greatest assets as a volunteer teacher is your ability to speak and write good English. Secondary School teaching is normally to GCSE standard and apart from teaching English you will have the chance to teach other subjects including Biology and Geography. In Primary Schools you will teach mainly English. Since early 2008 the government has introduced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and as a result there is now a huge shortage of computer teachers and computers! You do not need to be an expert in this field - knowing how tio send and recieve an e-mail using a PC is more than enough!
Some of the greatest rewards of your stay will come from the extra curricular activities you can initiate and get involved in. Sport, art, drama and music are always well received by your students and act as an excellent vehicle for learning English. Whilst resources can be extremely limited there is a tremendous enthusiasm for the ideas volunteers come with. You will always be placed with at least one other volunteer. In the orphanage you can expect to help with the babies and children. This is a tough assignment for those who enjoy working with the little ones. You will play witrh them, teach them simple skills and games and give them lot and lots of hugs! The orphanage is poor and has limited resources so you will need to be able to cope within a fairly stressful working environment. It is possible to mix both the school and the orphanage placements. For those with a genuine interest in medicine then we can offer the opportunity to wokr in a general hospital in Kumasi. Depending on your previous experiences your role will be largely observational. You will help the doctors and nurses, understand the plight of the patients and get a very good understanding of the health situation in Ghana. If you wish to specialise in a particular department then we can help organise this. For example we had a volunteer who wished to work in the physiotherapy department. You can focus or you can have a more general experience - the choice is yours! For those seeking to broaden their experiences in law you will be working office hours within a practice in Kumasi. You will be welcomed to the office where you will join a team of solicitors and/or barristers. You will be assigned to one person in the team to whom you will be directly responsible. Initially you will be shadowing this person but once you are settled in, understand the various roles within the team then a specific set of duties will be discussed and agreed with you. Depending on your previous experiences you can expect to work at all levels within the busy working office. You will need to meet strict deadlines, work and dress with a professional ethos and be prepared to make the tea!
