Photos of Brazil gap year

Our placements are a small coastal town of Canavieiras in the state of Bahia, south of the  regional capital, Salvador.

It a safe town with a population of around 35, 000 people.

The locals and friendly and welcome visitors. There are plenty of bars and cafes where the locals congregate.

The town possesses shops and supermarkets selling all kinds of produce from electrical goods to T shirts. There is small market selling local produce of vegetables and fruit.

Canavieiras has two banks – both posses ATMs so you can withdraw money without difficulty.

Brazilians like to looks good and spend a lot of time getting in to shape in the local gyms.

There is a good internet connection from the internet cafes in town – they are cheap (less than £1 per hour) and reliable.

The real gem however is the beach – less than 3 kilometres away and within walking distance. It is simply wonderful – and empty! There is the chance to learn to surf there too.

Very few people own and drive cars so the place feels quiet…and it is is! Volunteers need to be adaptable, willing to take the initiative and get to know the locals. We do suggest you learn at least basic Portuguese before you depart from the UK.

Purchasing a bike would be highly recommended – not only to get to and from the beach but to get around town in general. The locals use them. We reckon a half decent bike would be a sound investment at £60.
